VOLCAN TENORIO NATIONAL PARK / RIO CELESTE

Tenorio Volcano National Park is found in the northern region, between the Arenal volcano and Miravalles volcano, with that status since 1995. It forms part of the Arenal/Tempisque Conservation Area and covers 12,000 hectares under both the Caribbean and the Pacific climate influences. The National Park is dominated by the volcano, from which it receives its name.

Tenorio Volcano consists of three volcanic peaks with multiple craters and the Montezuma volcano with twin craters, one filled with the Tapir Lagoon. The main summit culminates at a height of 6,287 feet (1,913 m) and is considered dormant, with no eruption reported in modern history. The awe-inspiring Rio Celeste (Blue River) is turned literally blue at the convergence of two rivers containing different mineral components which creates a chemical reaction. Thermal springs and emanation of gazes from the river, the amazing waterfall, lagoons and panoramic views, monkeys and lots of birds, the tapir and the (rarely seen) puma reside in the area. Bird watching in the region is excellent. The upper area of the park is dominated by primary cloud forest, while the lower regions are carpeted with rainforest, receiving up to 4000 mm of rain per year.
